Thunderstorms In OKC: NBA Finals Finale ⛈🏆
The Oklahoma City Thunder are the 2024-2025 NBA Champions! They earned their franchise’s first championship in their 17-year tenure; formerly known as the Seattle Supersonics.
OKC defeated the fast-tempo Indiana Pacers in a 103-91 Game 7 victory on Sunday. Many fans were skeptical about the Pacers winning Game 7 at OKC. They were undoubtedly correct, but there’s a massive asterisk next to the Pacers Game 7 performance. Their Olympic gold medalist, all-star caliber starting point guard Tyrese Haliburton suffered a torn right achilles tendon with 4:55 left in the first quarter. So much time left; the Pacers faced extreme difficulty when trying to process the injury mid-game. The absence of their engine plagued Obi Toppin specifically; Toppin went scoreless going 0-4 from the field, missing his three three-point attempts. During the postgame interview, he mentioned the immediate negative impact of the injury, acting as the detriment for his scoreless Game 7 performance. Even as a devout fan, watching the injury in real time was so painful. Observing the tenacity of the Pacers since the beginning of 2025 was so special. Haliburton was giving Jalen Brunson a run for his clutch player of the year award once they dethroned the NY Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals. Witnessing their season crumble at the blow of the whistle hurt. Watching Haliburton slap the floor as he felt the pain of the torn achilles depressed fans looking for a competitive final game; for the fans who have witnessed the post-season Pacers tour, we wanted to have a Game 7 reminiscent of the legendary 2016 NBA Finals. Haliburton did post a candidly commendable update on his social media late Monday night. If you weren’t a fan of Haliburton before, this statement will quickly change your opinion : “And honestly, right now, torn Achilles and all, I don’t regret it. I’d do it again, and again after that, to fight for this city and my brothers. For the chance to do something special.”
Despite this life-draining horror story, the Pacers weren’t completely out of the game. The Pacers, with an absent Hailiburton, led OKC 48-47 at halftime. Then in the third quarter, OKC catapulted themselves into the lead, outsourcing the Pacers 34-20. With their 13-point lead heading into the fourth, fans around the world wanted head coach Rick Carlisle to raise the white flag. The MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led OKC in scoring with his 29 points; he also managed to grab 12 assists, five rebounds, two blocks, and one steal. Jalen Williams earned 20 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. Chet Holmgren had a more impressive game than the previous, raking up 18 points, eight rebounds, five blocks, and a steal. Cason Wallace and Alex Caruso, the designated “Unc” of the team, were the only two OKC players to score off the bench; they both scored a much needed 10 points. It’s not always about how much you score; the timelessness of points may shift the energy and pace to take a team to the top. That was the case for Wallace in particular, his five points towards the end of the third was the last strike to put the hammer in the Pacer’s coffin. OKC showcased one of the dominant seasons of all time. They won 84 games between the regular season and playoffs, tying the 1996-1997 Chicago Bulls for the third most in NBA history.
Bennedict Mathurin led the Pacers in scoring despite coming off the bench. His impressive Game 7 double-double: 24 points and 13 rebounds went along with three assists and two steals. T.J. McConnell was tied for the second leading scorer, accumulating 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, one steal, one block, but committed seven turnovers. Pascal Siakam scored 16 points, four rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block. Andrew Nembhard showed promise for next season, showcasing his shot-creating ability with his 15 point, six assist, and five rebound performance.
The Pacers committed 23 turnovers compared to OKC’s eight. OKC capitalized, scoring 32 points from the turnovers, compared to the Pacers scoring 10. OKC dominated in the paint, outsourcing the Pacers 40-26. OKC shot worse from the field, the free throw line, and grabbed less total rebounds than the Pacers despite their victory.
SGA was crowned the Finals MVP. Despite being crowned a champion, SGA had to celebrate a once in a lifetime three-crown achievement. SGA became the fourth person in NBA history to earn the regular season MVP, scoring title, and finals MVP in the same year; he joins a list with first-ballot hall of famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar(known as Lew Alcindor at the time), Michael Jordan, and Shaquille O’Neal. SGA joins MJ as the only player to score 3,100+ points, 500+ rebounds and 600+ between the regular season and playoffs. According to the NBA’s website, SGA and Jalen Williams combined for 377 points in the finals, passing MJ and Scottie Pippen (1993) for the second-most by a Finals duo in the last 50 years — trailing only LeBron James and Kyrie Irving (2016)
Immediately after the victory, SGA flexed his signature Converse SHAI 001 shoes around his neck. It has been rumored that the shoes will be released this upcoming fall. This immediately had me pondering… Haliburton’s signature Puma shoe, the PUMA Hali 1, is set to debut in the fall as well. It'll be interesting to see how the results of the Finals skew the consumer demand for their respective shoes. Haliburton experiencing the torn achilles might sway some fans away from the Puma signature. SGA on the other hand, may have gained a newfound audience that can potentially propel Converse basketball into the Magic Johnson and Larry Bird realm.
NBA Off-Season Explosive Moves 🚀🧨
Ranking the top off-season trades:
Kevin Durant traded to the Houston Rockets (June 22, 2025)
Rockets Receive: F Kevin Durant
Suns Recieve: G Jalen Green | F Dillon Brooks | 2025 first-round pick (No. 10) | 2025 second-round pick (No. 59, via OKC) | Two 2026 second-round picks | 2030 second-round pick (via BOS) | 2032 second-round pick
The Rockets earned the number two seed in the western conference, going 52-30. Sadly for them, the young team matched up with the Golden State Warriors in the first round — still managing to take the experienced Warriors to seven games. Their biggest flaw was scoring and more specifically, off-the-dribble scoring; two aspects that are KD’s strongest assets. According to GeniusIQ, the Rockets ranked 27th in effective field goal percentage on off-the-dribble jumpshots. KD has averaged at least 25 points, 50% field goal shooting and 40% on 3-pointers in three straight seasons — the longest streak ever in the NBA. The Rockets are a problem for the west; their championship odds jumped from +1800 to +850 once the trade was verified. Giving up Dillon Brooks’ defense means the Rockets are confident in their young core. Also, the number of traded picks denote the high level of confidence with the young core.
Desmond Bane Traded to the Orlando Magic (June 15, 2025)
Orlando Magic Receive: G Desmond Bane
Memphis Grizzlies Receive: G Kentavious Caldwell-Pope | G Cole Anthony | 2025 first-round pick (No. 16) | 2026 first-round pick (swap rights from Phoenix or Washington) | 2028 first-round pick | 2029 first-round pick swap | 2030 first-round pick
The Orlando Magic battled through serious injuries last season from Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs. The Magic shot the league-worst three-point percentage last season. With Bane’s elite shooting and defense, he can easily become the 20+ppg scorer the Magic needs. The interesting aspect of the trade surrounds the number of picks for Bane. The Magic are putting all their eggs into one basket. Despite their injuries, the Magic could have easily been ranked as a top-five team in the eastern conference. This season, if injuries don’t plague them again, I can see them easily coasting into the top five.
Jrue Holiday Traded to the Portland Trailblazers (June 23, 2025)
Boston Celtics Receive: G Anfernee Simons | Two future second-round picks
Portland Trailblazers Receive: G Jrue Holiday
The Celtics were looking to get rid of contracts to fit under the cap. The two-time all-star Holiday was on the short end of the stick. Reports came out that Holiday was furious to get traded to Portland — and rightfully so. There have also been rumors that the Celtics may move on from Simons to go into a different direction. Assuming he stays, Simons can play a vital role on both ends of the floor. Last year he averaged 19.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 4.8 assists. As Jayson Tatum recovers from his torn achilles, Simons can run up the score during the down year.
Celtics, Hawks, and Nets Three-Team Deal (June 24, 2025)
Boston Celtics Receive: F Georges Niang | Second-round pick
Atlanta Hawks Receive: C Kristaps Porzingis | Second-round pick
Brooklyn Nets Receive: G Terance Mann | 2025 first-round pick (No. 22)
This shouldn’t shock basketball fans. Porzingis is too injury prone to produce the effective dominance of the Celtics. He played 42 regular season games and was rumored to be sick during the playoffs. He was supposed to earn $30,731,707 this upcoming season; a value that was not compatible with the direction of the team — essentially the team checkbook. Porzingis always caught slack since he had a superstar cast. Role players could be plugged and played while we somewhat notice him on the bench. I’m excited for the lob threat with Porzingis and Trae Young for Atlanta, but that all depends on the health of the forward.
Jordan Poole Traded to the New Orleans Pelicans
New Orleans Pelicans Receive: G Jordan Poole | G Saddiq Bey | 2025 second-round pick (No. 40)
Washington Wizards Receive: G CJ McCollum | F Kelly Olynyk | Future second-round pick
The Poole Party is heading to New Orleans. He will join Zion Williamson as a potential one-two star-studded duo that can put butts into seats. Many former NBA players listed cities where NBA careers die — and New Orleans is usually at the top of the list. There’s a big hypothetical at play when it comes to Williamson; when he plays, he is one of the best players the league has seen. But, he has only played 214 games despite playing five seasons. For the Wizards, the veteran presence of McCollum, accommodated with another lottery pick, can help develop young players such as Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, Corey Kispert, and Bub Carrington.
Dreams Come True — An NBA Draft Night Preview ⛹️♂️💭
Round 1 of the NBA Draft begins tonight at 8 PM EST. Here’s a mock draft list, courtesy of NBC Sports, that I can definitely see occurring tonight. Some players I’m excited to see walk across the stage are Dylan Harper, Derik Queen, and Liam McNeeley.
In Other News:
Los Angeles Lakers $10 Billion Sale 💰📊
The Los Angeles Lakers — a premier basketball franchise that won the second most NBA championships (17 — one less than the Boston Celtics), recently embarked on a monumental $10 billion sale. The Buss family, who have owned the Lakers since 1979, agreed to sell majority ownership to Mark Walter. Jerry Buss purchased the team for $67.5 million, producing a 148x return on the investment. This deal represents the largest sports sale in the entire world. The Buss family will retain a little over 15% stake while Jeanie Buss, the former controlling owner, will remain as the Lakers' governor, running the team for an unspecified number of years. Walter isn’t a rookie in the LA sports world; he is the chairman and CEO of TWG Global, a holding company that has stakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks, Chelsea Premier League club, and the Professional Women's Hockey League.
James Harden Sued For Negligence in Sexual Assault Case 👩⚖️⛹️♂️
11-time NBA All-Star and 16-year NBA veteran James Harden was sued for negligence in regards to a sexual assault case. The instance revolved around Harden’s New Years Eve party at his home in Houston, Texas. The plaintiff, Marisa Watley, accused Harden’s nephew, Justice Armani Blackburn, of sexually assaulting Watley while she was unconscious. Harden got tied into the suit because Watley declared Harden’s in-home security was negligent during/after the alleged assault. Travis Hunter Signed Historic Rookie Deal 💰🏉
Travis Hunter — the Heisman Trophy Winner, newlywed, and two-way trendsetter raised the bar again! He signed his rookie deal on Sunday evening with the Jacksonville Jaguars; a four-year $46.65 million fully guaranteed contract including a $30.57 million signing bonus paid up front. Hunter continues to rewrite history as he became the first non-quarterback not drafted first overall to receive his signing bonus up-front. There are currently only two first round picks who have not signed their rookie deals; Broncos cornerback Jahdae Barron (20th pick) and the highly reported Bengals defensive end, Shemar Stewart (17th pick).
Offset & JID Released Single — “Bodies” 🎶👥
Offset was tired of the viral Stefon Diggs and Cardi B posts on his timeline. This hot girl summer was met with a cold collaboration with JID. “Bodies” sampled the legendary head-banging rock track “Bodies” by Dallas-formed rock group, Drowning Pool. The nearly three-minute track is filled with eerie chord undertones, horror-themed lyrics, and an elite feature from JID; shouting out fellow Atlanta native Anthony Edwards. With one of the more unexpected collaborations as we head into the summer, the track was met with high praise; many praised Offset for finding his lyrical groove in spite of the relationship turmoil displayed on social media.
WHAT WE’RE ENJOYING!
Slick Rick, a pioneer in hip-hop storytelling and fashion, released the project “Victory” on June 13th, 2025; this is The Ruler’s first album since the 1999 “The Art of Storytelling.” release. The project features hard-hitting boom-bap, house, and spoken word tracks to commemorate nearly four decades of work. The culture loves and appreciates the smooth-talking London-born legend. Nas, Giggs, and Estelle are featured on the project. While Rick self-produced an overwhelming majority of the album, Emmy-nominated and rapper-DJ Idris Elba assisted on the production. The 15-track, 27-minute project, was accompanied by a short film a week later. The 30-minute short film/ visual album, which was directed by Meji Alabi — a Nigerian/British Grammy Award-winning director who collaborated with Beyonce, Wizkid, Burna Boy, etc., conceptualizes the mind behind the elite storytelling journey from his youth to present day. Enjoy the visual album and make sure to check out the album on your DSPs.
